The death of Hamsphere

No sooner do I get enthusiastic about becoming a ham radio. I learn that the very same people who I want to join have ruined and wrecked an inovative piece of software by pissing off the creator to such an extent that he drops the whole project.

From Hamsphere;;;;;;;;;;;;;
I quote

HamSphere information panel

As of today 23 april 2008 Hamsphere is closed until further notice.

A Big THANK YOU to all of you who downloaded the software and made contacts on my system. Good on you!

The reason for the close is that the system was not being used due to my "BIG MISTAKES" according to some Ham Operators (Hams).

And what about my big mistakes...

Most Hams seem to have lost their experimental lust.

Most Hams apparently have tried to avoid noise and fading all their life.

Most hams think that a regulated system with approved licenses was required.

Most licensed HAM operators avoid my system due to the fact I gave non licensed users access.

I have learned my lesson, HamSphere became PirateSphere, and I had it coming!

I don't want to be an Amateur Radio operator anymore - the spirit is all gone for me.

HamSphere was developed for one big reason. It was a pure challenge for me as a programmer.

The digital signal processing in this system was a true challenge.

I wanted to prove it was possible to develop a system based on real radio stuff like

digital oscillators, mixers and real ionospheric parameters.

And I did it. The technology is way different from the other systems.

A little request: If anyone wants to develop a licensing system for HamSphere
and take over where I failed, you are welcome to get my system for free and set it up for pure licensed users.

I won't do it, but you can! Email kelly@lindman.com.

Good bye and thank you all users for trying my system out.

Kelly Lindman

ex SM7NHC

You guys have wrecked a tool that will introduce new blood to the hobby which let's face it is on its ass. Shall we let everyone die off and sell the HF bands to Motorola?

On a positive note:

I am even more motivated now to get going to ensure that those who feel uncomfortable with the attitudes of some hams have nothing to fear and should be proud of the achievement of a licence whatever level.

PS. I would like to add that all MW stations (GWs) have been totally positive and full of support for me and my two buddys who wish to proceed with our interests. the above should only annoy those who have the prejudice and no radio spirit.

That's gutting, for users as well as the author. I can relate to the amount of shit he must have got to feel this backed into a corner. Sometimes writing free software for art's sake is more trouble than it's worth :(

What a great shame. I was really excited by HamSphere and was about to mail the dude to try and get him to add support for multiple soundcards (it would keep defaulting to my mobo card instead of the external USB one that goes to my room amp). Maybe I should try and get the codebase, customise it for a virtual 11m band and set it up on my server?

The thing I find most irksome is that the attitude of these old boy operators (who are mostly appliance ops themselves!) doesn't vary if the M3 in question is using a kit-built rig, trying their damndest with CW, or in the case of an intermediate is running a rig of their own design. Can I ask, exactly what does one have to do to be accepted? Travel back in time?

I WANT access to HF, so I'll smile sweetly and jump through the hoops as required. I can't see myself ever joining the RSGB though. I don't think I'd even bother getting ticketed if EC didn't scare me as much as it does.

Don't worry mate. We'll be operating however we wish when the old generation is in their graves. That's not to say I'm condemning every old boy op; there are surely still kind and generous folks out there, it just doesn't always feel like it.

It made me laugh with disgust at a comment on Hamsphere from an operator who was complaining that 80 meters was far too noisy for a QSO. Totally and utterly pathetic!

Reports of death are premature

;-)

Hi ... was googling for news about tomorrows contest and found this.
Good on you!

I've been licensed since '73, have done tons of contesting, but have been off the air for the past 4 years, since a cross-country move caused me to jettison all my gear.

So I've only been on HamSphere for 2 days, but have already had a few very fine chats, most of them with licensed hams, but not all.
Great stuff!

So this afternoon I set up another laptop to act as a keyer ("virtual sound cards" are actually more primitive / rare than they were with Win3.1 ... which I find odd) and am ready for tomorrow!

cheers

Hello VE6IU,

I jumped back into Hamsphere again and had a really nice evening of QSOs last night, spoke to a few guys and to some buddies that use a radio forum who are hungry for some radio but the propagation being so poor has kept them quiet.

If you're about tonight (UK tonight that is) then I'll keep an ear open for you, I should be QRV on the Hamsphere 40M band from around 9pm UK time.

Dam annoyed about missing the contest though :(

This has realy peed me off hamsphere going down ,I am an M3license holder living in the canaries ,so unable to use my radios due to licenses rules and regulations
Hamsphere was my only near radio hobby that i could use ,all kellies hard work gone due to some people bickering
Come on Kelly there are radio hams that want you to get back up and running ,perhaps if you charged for the use of the system it would keep the arsehole away

Please not that the first post about Hamsphere going QRT was 24/3/2008.

Shortly after this post Hamsphere re-appeared, all is well and Hamsphere is still there and still as great as ever.

I dont want anyone to be mislead reading this thread. The hammering Hamsphere had appears to be gone, it's always the same with anything new.

Now it is established, there are many great operators on there such as myself (HAHA) and Greg. Kelly is QRV often too.

There are also a couple of "radio stations" that appear on the band.

One is Paradise Radio on 7020 Khz. Wonder who that might be????? AHHHEM!
So there it is. Hamsphere is there and as great as ever.

And now it's gone again

Found this in my email this morning:

Dear HamSphere user.

Due to the lack of control, proper financing and general low interest, I am
closing HamSphere until further notice as of 9 july 2009.
If we (together) figure out a way on how to keep the bands active and how to
properly finance it, as well as maintaining a better control, it may return.

Keep posted at:
http://www.hamsphere.com

And, If you have any ideas on how to make it work, feel free sending me a
comment.

Sincerely

Kelly Lindman

Too bad. Hamsphere, we hardly knew ya...

HamSphere is a virtual ionosphere simulation based on the natural laws of radio propagation.

HamSphere 1.0 was closed in july 2009. I am renewing HamSphere and will release a new concept HamSphere 2.0 soon. Work is in progress.

New features:

* Brand new appealing Radio skin with true VFO.
* Chat functionality
* Improved DX cluster
* Same modulation technique as before. Hamsphere uses Digital Local Oscillators and true DSB modulation.
* Low bit speed requirements. Streams as low as 13kbit/s will suit any Internet user.
* Hi bit speed for Digital transmissions needing full uncompressed audio still possible.
* Limited tranceiver for guests (Limited band, power and filters)
* More bands that will suit all. DX bands with simulated propagations and "Local chat" bands without noise nor QSBs etc.
* No more firewall problems. Will work out of the box.
* Subscribers enjoy; DxCluster, Full power, unlimited bands, audio codecs, noise free bands if needed.
* Subscriptions only for real hams and serious "11 meter DX ers" that have to pass a test and a user agreement.
* Broadcast band for broadcast people. Will not interfere with QSO bands.
* Robots will be on demo and DX bands only. No QRM on rag chew bands.
* Full QSK = True Pile Ups possible (Which is not possible with other systems)
* New and improved audio filters with "on/off" possibility (for armchair quality on rag chew bands).
* Improved audio latency allowing users to short key the system in a different way.
* Improved user blocking to battle malicious interference etc.

Expect the new version out in late aug or early sept 2009

I do hope you try again. It is internet isn't it, and it is not radio. I feel you did a good thing, go back to it.
